Tennis over vacation

Coach Jeff and John had a great week of tennis clinics and workshops in South Florida. The week started off with in a three-day coaches workshop given by the Sanchez-Casal tennis academy. This academy trains (or have trained) many of the top professionals in the world including Nadal and Murray. Sanchez is the captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team that recently won the Davis Cup. We are currently finishing up the week at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association annual meeting. We are excited to incorporate what we have learned this week into workouts with our college teams and junior lessons.

Tennis Exchange Jan 9

Looking to do a junior tennis exchange with Columbia Basin Racquet Club (in Richland) Jan 9 1-3:30pm. Probably take around 8 players to their club for an afternoon of fun and tennis. Keep the date in mind and I'll post more information later!

Junior Event Saturday

We will have our last mini-tournament of the year Saturday at 11am. Matches are going to START at 11am so be there early to warm-up. I'll open the building at 10:30am.

We have 12 players participating this weekend so everyone will be divided into 4 groups of 3 players. Players will play a mini set (first to 5 games) against everyone in their division. Players will then play two more sets based on their pool position (all the #1's from each pool will make up a draw, #2's make up a draw etc). So a total of 4 sets of tennis. Additionally each player will get a "bye" during round robin play and will have a short break during the tournament.

One more week of Drop in Tennis

As you sign up for the Dec 12th match day, don't forget that this week is the final week of drop in tennis ($5 per day at the door) for 2009.

Dec 12 Match play day!

Saturday Dec 12 we will be running our 2nd "Grand Prix" junior event. In these events participants are broken into small groups and play non-stop for about 2.5 hours. I won't know the actual time of the matches until I have a compete list of the participants.

There are a few high school players from Moses Lake that would like to come to town and play. Any local high school age players want to play to fill out a draw? Wonderful opportunity to get out and play.

Also remember Monday and Wednesday 3:30-4:30 is drop-in lesson day for beginners 6 and up. Tuesday and Thursday is drop-in lesson day for players that can rally full court.

Drop in for Intermediate players

This afternoon we start the drop-in class for players that can rally from the baseline. Part of the class involves hitting/playing with/against Whitman players. Should be a real treat for those looking forward to the high school or middle school tennis season!

Also I added a side bar with information about the junior event on Saturday Dec 12. These "grand prix" events are an excellent way to get in some match play.

Drop in Tennis

If you haven't heard, check out these drop in sessions, starting TODAY!

Everyone. Coach John Hein and myself will be conducting drop-in JR lessons Nov 30 - Dec 10. The beginning(ish) classes are Monday and Wednesday 3:30-4:30. This class is best for the kids who aren't ready for full court rallying and/or who haven't played a tennis match. The intermediate(ish) classes are Tues and Thursday 3:30-4:30. This class will have more live-ball
drilling and hitting. On Tues and Thursday we will attempt to have at least one of the Whitman College tennis players on hand to hit against the students. This class should be incredibly experience for those getting ready for Middle/High school tennis!

Cost for the lessons is $5 per drop-in.

If you are planning on attending the December lessons could you please email me at northam@gmail.com with the days you are thinking of attending. This will help me gauge how many instructors to have each day.

Additionally Saturday December 12 we will be running a junior match-play event (we hope to make this a monthly event). Participates will be broken into small groups and will play for 2-3 hours. We had a test run last week and it was a great fun and had wonderful play experience.

Again the Mon and We lessons are for players that can't rally from full court. Tues and Thurs is for players that have played a match and/or can rally from the baseline.
