Winter Tennis Camp Coming up Jan 10-14

Happy Holidays to all!

To kick off the new year, the Women's tennis team at Whitman is hosting an after school week long tennis camp.  This is a fund raiser that will be coached by Coach John and members of the Women's team.

The camp is run through the City of Walla Walla Parks and Rec department so contact them to sign up.  Each camper gets a t shirt and no tennis experience or having your own racket is required, but we'll also split out age and ability levels so that competitive tournament and high school players get technical, strategic and fitness work to prepare them for the upcoming season.

The quickstart (10 and under) sessions will be from 3:30-4:45 Mon-Fri
The full court sessions will follow from 5-7 Mon-Fri.

Again, sign up at Parks and Rec, but if you have questions, please contact me at heinj@whitman.edu or (509) 301-8502.

Here's to great tennis and lots of fun in 2011!

More Drop in Tennis Scheduled! Donate to a good cause

The Women's tennis team at Whitman has adopted a family for the holidays this year and they asked me if we could run some drop in tennis and use the funds to help out with this endeavor.  Of course, I said, so we'll be on for drop in next week, Dec 6th, 7th and 8th from 3:30-4:15pm.

We'll be in the Bratton Tennis Center and will have enough space and coaches for all ages and abilities to come every day!  So bring a friend and play some tennis for a good cause.

There will be no cost for these sessions, but a $5 donation is suggested to help us help our family out.

For more information on the adopt a family program, click here

Warm regards,
Coach John

On now - Last Week of Drop in for 2010!

This week is our final week of after school drop in tennis for the year, so come on out to Bratton today through Thursday.  On Thursday we'll do some wristband testing so wear your colors and move up a level or learn what you need to keep working on.

Coach Jeff and I will keep working to keep kids playing tennis so keep an eye on your email and the blog and keep in touch.  If you have individual or group lesson needs, don't hesitate to contact us as we can help you find the right person whether it is off campus, one of our great student coaches or maybe there will be opportunities to do some one time drop in events over the next couple of months.

See you on the courts!

Drop in Continues and School Tennis Starts Up

Drop in tennis has been so much fun and before I left for a week in Alabama we did some wrist band testing and will look to do some again in about a week. I'm also very happy to announce that we have another coach available for Monday and Wednesday which has been the academy group, I'd like to encourage players who are just getting to full court and using the regular yellow tennis ball to come those days and we'll run one court of intermediate/younger advanced players. Contact me if you have questions.

Times are still 3:30-4:15 and cost is $5 at the door.
Mon/Wed = Int/Academy
Tues/Thurs = Beg/Adv Beg

SCHOOL TENNIS IS BACK!!!!
After a successful pilot run last year at Sharpstein (all 70 2nd graders had tennis lessons at school with Whitman Students as coaches!), we are fully into the swing of things at Edison Elementary and have added coaches from the Whitman men's team (Thanks Coach Jeff for having such a great group of caring and talented guys).

School tennis occurs with quickstart equipment for under 10 year olds at their school during PE time. It also provides a way for our Whitman players to use their tennis backgrounds in community service and exposes young elementary school students to tennis early so that they develop skills and learn about this great game. If you would like Whitman to come to your school, have your PE teacher or school representative contact me.

See you on the courts (or in your school gym) soon,

Coach John

End of Session II Wristbands

Thanks to everyone for such an incredible second session, we've got one more starting Aug 3rd and hope to see everyone back on the courts!

FYI - if you want more tennis, check out the Walla Walla Country Club, they have adult and junior programs, drop in sessions and you don't need to be a member.

OK, here are last weeks achievements, and yes, it is getting HARDER to pass. This is on purpose so that specific skills are developed before moving on with the game. Wear your bands with pride and a smile as you work for the next one, however difficult it may be.

Please let us know if I've accidentally left you off the list and a very special thanks from coach John for the special birthday art, it made my day!

WA State Games Tournament Draws

The draws to the Subway State Games can be found here

If you are playing in the tournament please check your start time.

Play day revisited (added full court playing)

Don't forgot tomorrows free play day at the Whitman indoor courts. We are playing on the short courts (beginning level) 1pm-2pm, medium court (advanced beginning) 2:30-3:30pm and full court (intermediate level and Academy I) 3:30-4:30pm. This will be a GREAT way for new players to some point play experience.

Also we are looking for some parents to help us organize future play days. We would like to offer these play days at least once a month but need parental volunteers to make it happen. Parents volunteers don't need much knowledge of tennis just the ability to organize players into matches. If you would be willing to help contact Coach John or Jeff.

Play time on the short court!

We would like to invite all the younger tennis kids to participate in a FREE match day this Friday. From 1pm-2pm we will have have the short courts set up for the beginning class to play (using our stage 2 ball). From 2:30-3:30pm we will have the 60' courts set up for play with our stage 3 ball (advanced beginning class). We will be using a short format so everyone gets a chance to rotate around and play different people.

This is a great kick off for the Subway Washington State Games junior tournament that starts Saturday morning. We have players from all across the region coming to participate in this tournament so it should be a blast. Over the weekend feel free to drop by to watch the tournament. Many local players are participating so come out and cheer them on!

For the mini-court tournament we need players to sign-up. Either send coach Jeff an email (northam@gmail.com) or sign-up during lessons tomorrow.

Tennis Equipment for youngsters

Hi everyone.

As so many children in our first session had a great time with the Quickstart tennis format we used (foam and large low compression balls, small rackets and short courts), I wanted people to at least know some places where they can purchase this gear so the kids can keep practicing and playing outside of planned tennis classes.

While local shops like WalMart and Big 5 may have some equipment, you can find lots online. A good source for good prices is the United States Tennis Association (USTA) website at http://www.ustashop.com/Getting_Started_Ages_5_6_s/17612.htm

Also, if people want to get together for a bulk order which could alleviate shipping, we get slightly better prices (not much, though) on Wilson, Gamma and Head equipment and would be happy to place an order for you.

Have a great 4th and we hope to see lots of you next week on court and at the Subway State Games Tournament right here in Walla Walla!

Subway State Games Tournament

The entry deadline for the Subway State games is right around the corner so if anyone is planning on playing now is the time to sign up. This is a unique opportunity for junior players in Walla Walla to play in a USTA tournament (the same organization that puts on the US Open). The tournament has a level for everyone: players in their first tournament, players who play some organized tennis (schools/club), and a level for the top juniors in the Pacific Northwest.

For our younger players we will be offering a free mini tournament Friday morning! We plan on having a division on the 36' court, 60' court and full court. This will be a fun way to get in some tennis. Let Coach John or Jeff know if you want to play.

Have a great 4th of July.

Session 1 in the books...Ready for #2 and the USTA Tournament?

Everyone,

Hello! I hope you're enjoying the summer weather that finally arrived and are getting outside for lots of fun activities - maybe some tennis?

Both of us were so pleased with the first session of tennis this summer. The tennis was outstanding with everyone showing great improvement and focus, but more importantly there were so many smiles and excited faces out there! Because of this, for the next session, July 6-8 and 13-15 we have added some coaches and increased our enrollment caps, so tell a friend to signup with you soon because they are filling up quickly!

We also have a tremendous opportunity to get some amazing experience with the Subway State Games tennis tournament being hosted at Whitman July 9-12. The tournament website is here and you can talk either of us about how the divisions and tournaments work. This chance to compete so close to home doesn't happen often, so take advantage by signing up for singles, doubles or both by the deadline of July 3rd at 11:59pm. This is a United States Tennis Association (USTA) event so you will need a membership, which comes with some great benefits and is a must for every competitive tennis player. You can sign up at the USTA website. and click on "Membership".

Ok, down to the important business of our Wristband testing system to help progress everyone to a new level and show you the things you can still work on to move up.

Earning a Red band this week on the 36' court are:
Joyce Huang
Parker Pontarolo
Aidan Turner
Lily Turner

Earning a Purple band on a 60' court this week are:

Women's tennis gives back to Walla Walla youth

I've posted on this before as it is a project I'm extremely proud of. Yes, it's our team's tennis in schools program where the ladies volunteer their time, energy and expertise with the racket to introduce tennis to local schoolchildren. You can read the PNW tennis times with an article and photo of Emily teaching on page 11 right here.

This year, the men's team has expressed interest in joining us and we'll continue to use the equipment funded by the USTA and start branching out to a second school in Walla Walla. While just providing the lessons and developing hand eye coordination skills while spreading knowledge of the game is enough reward in itself, last week during the first week of Walla Walla Parks and Rec tennis camps, Jeff Northam and I were excited to have a few kids enrolled who were first introduced to tennis at Sharpstein Elementary last year with our team!

Congratulations

Week one of the 2010 summer tennis program is officially in the books! For those watching the tennis groups you will start to notice players wearing different colored wristbands. Coach John and I have developed a series of proficient tests to help guide player development (ala Karate belt). Last week we did testing for the beginning and advanced beginning classes and will start testing in the intermediate and academy groups this week.

Congratulations to the following players for upgrading from white to orange. The orange test is giving with the larger low compression ball on a 36' court.

Cassie Dixon
Elsa Gomsrud
Joyce Huang
Claire McDevitt
Parker Pontarolo
Aidan Turner
Lily Turner

Congratulations Therese McCarty and Madison Darnold for getting their purple band. This test is giving with the normal sized low compression ball on a 60' court. Additionally Therese was invited to move into the intermediate class.

This is our last week of the June session and we will resume after the 4th of July. For the next session we opened up additional spots in the tiny tots and beginning classes. Have a friend that wants to play tennis? Make sure to get them to sign up early before all the spots are taken!

Hi everyone, the Springtime is here which means more and more outdoor tennis. With the WaHi season in full gear, Whitman is winding down. Today (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday) are your last chances to see great college tennis here in Walla Walla. The women play Lewis and Clark Saturday at 2pm and then Willamette Sunday at 9am. Both matches are scheduled for the outdoor courts but will be moved indoors if the weather is bad.

Watching high level tennis is a great way to learn and we'd love to have you out supporting us if you can.

Men's tennis action this weekend and FREE pizza on Saturday

Busy weekend of action for the Whitman's men's team as we take on Willamette Saturday 2pm and Lewis Clark Sunday 2pm. Looks like great weather for the weekend (highs in the 60's) so we are planning on playing outside. At the start of Saturday's match we will again be providing free pizza from Pizza Pipeline. Make sure to show up early for some smoke hot doubles and hot pizza!

Saturday we get to see Willamette for the first time this year. They are currently riding a nice NWC streak (5-0) and last weekend defeated PLU (6-3). The PLU victory was a real high spot for Willamette since it was the first time in over 20 years they had defeated PLU in tennis. Tomorrow's match will be a good test to see where we are in the conference. In our conference opener three weeks ago we narrowly defeated PLU 5-4. Since then we have had the opportunity to move around some doubles combinations and play a lot of inter-team matches. I know the guys are excited to be playing a good opponent at home.

Willamette is currently first place in the NWC with 5-0 conference record (5-2 overall) and is ranked #14 in the West Region. Last week their freshman number #1 player Michael Baumgartner was named NWC Player of the Week. From their record it looks like Willamette has been playing good doubles .. only dropping 2 doubles matches in 5 team matches (against PLU).

Whitman is currently 3-0 in conference and 4-1 overall (our only loss at the hands of #1 ranked UC Santa Cruz). In the latest National Poll we moved up to #25 (#6 in the West).

Sunday I'm planning on using 12 different players in our match against Lewis and Clark College. It will be a good opportunity for our entire squad to get play at home.

Hope to see you at the courts!

Coach Jeff
